Large Lantern

Sculpture

29cm / 29cm / H 50cm

materials: PLA

The Large Lantern reimagines the archetype of traditional East Asian lanterns through a digital, monolithic lens. Its tiered structure ascends with balanced symmetry, each cantilevered layer articulated by a repeating grid of softly concave forms. The silhouette evokes sacred pagodas, while the modular language suggests digital stacking or voxel construction.

Crafted in translucent PLA, the lantern emits a serene, atmospheric glow. Its internal lighting filters through interlocking geometries, casting gentle gradients and creating a contemplative, almost sacred ambiance. Equal parts artifact and sculpture, the Large Lantern brings cultural memory into dialogue with algorithmic form.

The large lantern is part of four in the titled collection. It draws upon the rich tapestry of Chinese mythology, specifically the celestial realm known as the Heavenly Palace (天宫) — a divine citadel presided over by the Jade Emperor, ruler of the heavens.

The series reimagines this mythic landscape through four illuminated objects, each envisioned as a sacred bastion suspended in the sky.
